DECS names best schools in science and math

Two elementary schools in Cotabato and Negros Occidental emerged as grand winners in the nationwide search for the most effective public elementary schools in science and math, sponsored by the Department of Education.
In the central category, the grand winner was Kabacan Pilot Central Elementary School in Cotabato. Baguio Special Education Center and Pototan Pilot Elementary School in Iloilo were runners-up.
In the non-central category, Bacuyangan Elementary School in Negros Occidental was adjudged the grand winner. Agusan del Sur Pilot Laboratory School and Gov. P. F. Espiritu Elementary School in Cavite were runners-up.
The grand winners received P50,000 and the first and second runners-up P30,000 and P20,000.
Simeona Ebol, assistant chief of the education department’s Curriculum Development, said the schools were evaluated using criteria including performance in tests.
Other schools that excelled in the subjects were also given special awards.
The Excellence in Science award went to Digos Central Elementary School in Digos City; Tuguegarao West Central School in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan; Santo Cristo Elementary School in Tarlac City; Santo Niño Elementary School in Koronadal City; Cassidy Elementary School in Leyte; and Paralaya Elementary School in Pampanga.
Excellence in Math went to Butuan Central Elementary School in Butuan City; Pagadian City Pilot Elementary School in Pagadian City; Nabua East Central School in Camarines Sur; Makati Elementary School in Metro Manila; Napocor Elementary School in Iligan City; and Cataggaman Elementary School in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.
Other national finalists were F. Camaguin Elementary School; Binangonan Elementary School; Odiongan North Central School; Lapulapu Central School; Rizal Central School; Malaybalay City Central School; Broce Central School; F. Benitez Elementary School; Tamurong Elementary School; Budiong Elementary School; Legaspi Port Elementary School; Pajo Elementary School; Bogabongan Elementary School; E. Quirino Elementary School; Maguindanaon Elementary School; and Piwong Elementary School.
